[edit] Biography
Achenar was raised on Myst with his brother Sirrus. As children they were taken by Atrus to visit Everdunes, where they met Pran. When Achenar was 10 their great-grandmother Anna died, but Achenar found it difficult to deal with his emotions even as Atrus withdrew from his sons, focusing on his work in the Ages in reaction to his loss.
Although Atrus saw Sirrus and Achenar as nuisances when they were younger, he took them to Mechanical to help defend against the black ships and was impressed by their efforts there. After visits to Channelwood, where the brothers learned the language of the tree-dwelling natives and built a boat to explore the surrounding waters, Atrus and Catherine decided to permit them to visit the Ages on their own. In an effort to begin teaching his sons the Art, Atrus wrote Lesson Ages and constructed a series of puzzles that would culminate in lessons from Saavedro on Narayan and the importance of balance. However, neither Sirrus or Achenar would go on to learn to Write.
As an adult, Achenar was mentally unstable and emotionally out of control. He came to take pleasure in having power over the Ages, torturing the people and destroying their worlds. One of the first Ages he and Sirrus despoiled was Narayan, where they claimed that they had the power to alter the Age to make the constant tending of the Lattice Tree unnecessary, and incited a civil war that devastated Narayani civilization. When Saavedro followed them to J'nanin, they burned the Linking Book, leaving him trapped.
Achenar often clashed with his smugly arrogant brother, who he hated furiously, but he was willing to work together with Sirrus in a plan to eliminate their parents before they learned of what the brothers had been doing. Although Atrus and Catherine were successfully trapped away from Myst, Achenar's suspicion of his brother overcame him while they were working on the fulfillment of their plan in Serenia, and he left for Haven, access to which had been previously denied by Atrus.
Achenar soon realized that Haven was a trap, and that he had no way back. At first he went on a killing spree with the native animals, trying in particular to kill both cerpatees that inhabited the area. After he succeeded in this he lost some of his purpose and fell into melancholy, beginning to be tormented by his guilt. Eventually he discovered he could engage in rudimentary communication with the mangrees, which relieved some of his loneliness.
After twenty years of isolation, Atrus and Catherine made contact with him again via a secure linking cage. He befriended his little sister, and when Sirrus pursued her to Haven Achenar tried to protect her but was incapacitated by one of Sirrus's crystal bombs. When he recovered he went to Tomahna and thence to Serenia to try and rescue her. After realizing Sirrus's plan to switch bodies with Yeesha, he helped the Stranger reverse the process. As the Memory chamber they were in was dying, he used the Life Stone to keep it alive long enough to save Yeesha, but exposed himself to its toxic gases in the process. He died reassuring Yeesha that "everything [was] going to be all right."

[edit] Background
In Myst, Achenar was portrayed by Rand Miller (who also portrayed his father, Atrus), and in Revelation by actor Guy Sprung.
In Myst, the player can communicate with Achenar and through the linking panel he will ask for the pages that will repair his linking book and set free. However canonically this didn't actually happen.
