The Art

The Art is the ability to write links to other worlds or Ages.
These links take the form of linking books. Linking to an age is done by placing the hand on such a book's linking panel, which shows the target age.
To create a link to an age, one must first write a descriptive book, describing the age the writer wants to link to. Once a descriptive book has been written, additional linking books can be written.
Special books and ink were necessary, as was knowledge of the advanced concepts and gahrohevtee characters used in writing the book.

Based on our current knowledge, the first people (or at least among the first people) to know of The Art were the Ronay, the ancestors of the D'ni, although how they came to this knowledge is currently unknown. It was used to link away from Garternay before its destruction.
According to Yeesha the Art was much more powerful in the beginning and became limited by the strict rules of the D'ni. She seems to have recovered the original power of the Art, which may be connected to the Bahro.
[edit] Limitations
The Art as the D'ni knew it had many limitations. Links could not be made to a different place within the same Age. For example, a linking book that linked to Bevin cannot be used in Ae'gura, as both locations are in D'ni. Yeesha is known to make exceptions to this rule; a working Great Zero book with her sign on it can be found in Bevin. Yeesha's Relto Books are another example.
Another shortcoming is that the linking book would be left behind when used. Yeesha's Relto Books also overcome this limitation by going with the person that is using it, only if they are holding or wearing the book.
