Brøderbund was a computer game and education software publisher, who had been working with Cyan on some of their earlier titles, thus making them the obvious choice for Myst's and later Riven's distribution.

As typical of a publisher, their influence on Cyan was a mixture of advice and uncomfortable control. Of note, however, Brøderbund's Tim Larkin was eventually hired full-time at Cyan.

At the time Riven was released, Brøderbund had established a Red Orb brand, which was used for a handful of games, including Riven (it appears on the packaging and is present in a logo video upon the game's launch). The name is merely a joke: Its letters backwards form "Broder."

Brøderbund as an independent company ceased to exist following the TLC (and later Mattel Interactive) buyout. The Broderbund (replacing the ø with an o) brand lives on at Riverdeep, who continue to publish some of Brøderbund's software products.
