Chess is a native board game invented in the Age of Earth. Anna's father was a player of chess and while ill, Anna bought him a board from Tadjinar, on which he taught her and played often.
On their way to the Lodge, Anna showed the board to Aitrus and he taught him too. Atrus was also probably taught by Anna and used to play it with Yeesha. The Serenian amulet showed two memories of Atrus playing chess with Sirrus, who stumbled into a Légal trap (Wikipedia) Atrus had set.
Sirrus had a stone chess board in Spire on which he played with his father. However his primary motivation for requesting the chess set was to have a sample of nara for his experiments.
