A Crystal viewer was an invention of Atrus used to 'tune' with another Age and have glimpses of it.

For the crystals to operate, they demanded low temperatures and that's why he choose Rime for a place to build his first viewer.

About 20 years later he decided to simulate low temperatures in order to built another one in Tomahna. That way he could often oversee the safety of his sons while surviving in Haven and Spire.
