Spoiler warning: the following contains details about puzzles, plot, or similar. If you're not familiar with them already, continuing to read may affect your experience.

In each of the Myst games, there are multiple ways of ending the game; only one way is the winning ending. Uru has winning endings only.

[edit] Myst

[edit] Winning ending

You go to K'veer and give Atrus the white page, and he leaves and destroys the red and blue books. He comes back and offers you his library as a reward. You can use the Myst book to go back to Myst and continue exploring.

[edit] Losing endings

  1. You go to K'veer without the white page. The Myst book does not work, and you and Atrus are trapped there forever.
  2. You get the red page from behind the fireplace and put it in the red book. You are trapped in the red book as Sirrus, now freed, takes out the pages.
  3. This is the same as the previous one, but you get the blue page and free Achenar instead.

[edit] Riven

[edit] Winning ending

You trap Gehn in the Prison Book. Then, you go to Prison Island and free Catherine. Finally, you open the Star Fissure on Temple Island. Meanwhile, Catherine evacuates the villagers to Tay. Atrus comes with a Linking Book, and is reunited with his wife. Catherine links back to D'ni, and Atrus follows soon after, holding the book over the fissure so that it falls down it. Then you fall down, through lots of stars. You turn around and see the outline of the fissure as there is a voiceover of Atrus saying that he thinks you got home safely.

[edit] Losing endings

[edit] Destroying Riven

  1. You open the Star Fissure after trapping Gehn, but before freeing Catherine. As in the other, Riven starts to collapse. Atrus appears with a Linking Book, but when Catherine does not come, he starts to get worried. Finally, he is forced to leave without Catherine because of the Age's instability, and you fall down the Star Fissure.
  2. You open the Star Fissure with the Prison Book, but without trapping Gehn. Riven starts collapsing. Atrus comes, but is puzzled when he learns that you have basically done nothing. Gehn comes with his guard while Atrus is talking, though he does not notice. Gehn makes his presence known and shoots Atrus and takes the Prison Book from his dead body. He then thanks you, and tells his guard to shoot you. Gehn probably uses the book and goes to D'ni, but you are dead, so there is no way to know.
  3. You open the Star Fissure before getting the Prison Book. While the events should have happened as above (Atrus linking, Gehn coming and shooting him), the games wants you to fall down the fissure before anything else. Gehn probably comes and shoots Atrus, and gets the real Linking Book back to D'ni, but you have already fallen down the Fissure, so you don't see or know anything. There is really no reason why having the Prison Book or not would make a difference as to when you fall, but it does in the game. Because both the Prison Book and the code to open the Fissure are given to you in Tay, this ending cannot be accessed naturally, but only by returning to a saved game after learning the code.

[edit] Trapping yourself

  1. You enter the Prison Book somewhere in Riven or the 233rd Age before Gehn is trapped. Later, Gehn forces his guard to use the book, and you come out in his office. He makes a short speech, and then shoots you.
  2. If you trap yourself somewhere in Riven before meeting Gehn, you see a similar scene, however this time Gehn introduces himself after shooting you.
  3. You trap yourself in the book in Tay before capturing Gehn. You, from in the book, see two of the Moiety talking, and then one of them closes the book. Because of the flickering lights, it is possible the book was to be burned; in that case you can never get out.
  1. After you capture Gehn, you can then trap yourself in your own book and release Gehn; you can do it anywhere in Riven. He is freed and you are trapped, and everything goes back to the way it was before you came.
  2. You release him in Tay or the room with its Linking Book, you are trapped in the book and Gehn is freed. He tells you they are in the midst of war and thanks you for giving him the opportunity to bring him in their hiding place.

[edit] Annoying Gehn

  1. You give Gehn the Prison Book, but you do not use it. You summon him twice more after he leaves, and each time you refrain from entering the trap. Each time, Gehn gets more annoyed, until the third time you do not use it, he shoots you.

[edit] Myst III

[edit] Winning ending

You get Releeshahn, free Saavedro, and go to Tomahna. When Atrus writes in his journal later, he is happy.

[edit] Losing endings

  1. You get Releeshahn from Saavedro and go directly to Tomahna. Catherine and Atrus are happy, but when Atrus writes in his journal later he thinks you should have let Saavedro go.
  2. You go back to Tomahna without Releeshahn while in a place Saavedro cannot get to. Catherine and Atrus are sad.
  3. You go to Saavedro while he is standing by the gondola in Narayan. He tells you to go back and switch the shields. If you don't, he drops Releeshahn off the cliff and smashes your head with his hammer.
  4. You go to Saavedro, standing by the gondola, but instead of doing nothing you go back. Then, you come out again and stay there until he drops Releeshahn and smashes your head.
  5. You go to Saavedro twice. Each time he warns you and you go back. The third time you come out, he hits you with the Releeshahn book.
  6. You open the shield when Saavedro is crying. However, instead of the outer shield, you open the inner shield. You start to go down the stairs, but then Saavedro runs up and smashes you with the hammer.
  7. This is the same as the previous one, but you just stand there until he comes up, instead of you going down the stairs a little.
  8. This is the same as the previous two, but you go towards the door opposite the stairs before he hits you instead.
  9. You link to Tomahna while in a place that Saavedro can get to. Atrus is asking you if you got Releeshahn when Saavedro links in and smashes you on the head from behind. He probably kills Atrus, Catherine, and Yeesha too.

[edit] Ages Beyond Myst

You return all the pillars, fall down the Star Fissure, and listen to the recording of Yeesha. You link from the cleft to another place in the same room. Yeesha comes in and talks about rain, and it starts to rain. Then she leaves. You climb out of the cleft and see bahro climbing into the volcano.

[edit] To D'ni

You jump or fall down the Great Shaft after reading Dr. Watson's journal.

[edit] The Path of the Shell

You link to K'veer. Yeesha starts talking, though you cannot see her. Suddenly you link to the Ferry Terminal without a book, and holes appear in the cavern roof, light streaming through them. You then link back to K'veer. All this time Yeesha has been talking, saying that she is the Grower.

[edit] Myst IV

[edit] Winning ending

You pull the amber lever. Unfortunately Yeesha's mind does not return, so you must go back to Dream. You untangle Yeesha's memories from Sirrus's and awake. Sirrus dies because he has no Spirit Guide. Back in Serenia, Yeesha awakes and Achenar dies in her arms, poisoned by the pollen. Later, in Tomahna, Atrus talks to you about beginnings and endings.

[edit] Losing endings

  1. You don't pull either lever. Sirrus frees his hand and steals Achenar's crossbow. He shoots him and then shoots you.
  2. You pull the silver lever. Sirrus escapes and drops the giant stone onto you and Achenar. Achenar is crushed to death but you wake up later. Sirrus shoots you in the face.

[edit] Myst V

[edit] Winning ending

You give the Tablet to the bahro in K'veer. One sneaks up behind you and links you to a spot in front of Yeesha. She thanks you and three bahro link in next to her. A bahro links you to Releeshahn. There, Yeesha and Atrus talk to each other and thank you. Two bahro link in with Esher. Yeesha tells them to do with him as they should to the least. One links away with him. Yeesha and Atrus walk away. The remaining bahro grabs you and flies up in the air with you.

[edit] Losing endings

  1. You go to Myst without having given anyone the Tablet. Esher shouts at you and leaves you on Myst, stranded.
  2. You give Yeesha the Tablet. It disappears and she walks away. You go to Myst, Esher shouts at you, and you get stranded there.
  3. You go to Myst and give Esher the Tablet. He gains control of the bahro and leaves you on Myst, stranded.
