The fan palm is a large, tendriled plant native to Edanna. The palm is made up of a round pod and complex root system, with long petioles radiating upward and ending in large palmates, or fans.
The plant can be either extended, fans spread wide and stretched out to catch light, or compacted, where the fans shut into tight buds, by prodding the round pod at the plant's base. Though not necessarily clear what purpose this would serve in nature (save making the plant look unripe and unappetizing to herbivores), it assists in a number of Atrus's puzzles by supplying and blocking sunlight where convenient.
