Fan fiction is defined as a plot outline created by fans, typically without prior approval on Cyan's part. Most frequently, such content is created as a short story. Poetry is another common form. Some fan fictions may also be written as multi-chaptered stories.
Myst fan fiction generally uses pre-established characters, in other words, canon characters, though original characters, those that are created by the author, sometimes come into play.
With Myst Online: Uru Live, it is possible for fans to actually act out such fiction, get others (including Cyan-led characters, such as DRC members) involved and have the result automatically become part of canon. Outside of MO:UL, however, fan fiction is almost invariably non-canonical.
