Gehn's Fissure Plateau Cage.

The Fissure Plateau Cage was a linking chamber designed by Gehn and installed at the exact spot upon which a visitor to Riven would appear upon linking in, on the small plateau, by the capped star fissure on Temple Island.

The cage (operating with weight) was designed to capture and hold anyone who linked in while a guard searched that person for a linking book out of Riven. Specifically, it was Gehn's hope to capture either Atrus or Catherine, assuming they would be carrying a return book to D'ni city:

While I am sick with frustration at having lost the only quarry that cage has ever caught, I am also filled with hope ~ she [Catherine] may yet provide me with a way back to D'ni... If Catherine did bring a Linking Book with her, then I am halfway there ~ if not, then she is trapped in the Fifth Age and I can assume that my emotionally crippled son will soon be along to rescue her. Either way, it is crucial to my plans that I find her soon.

Eventually it seems that the Moiety also watched the cage. When Catherine linked to Riven, she was captured, but then drugged and soon liberated and taken with her people. Later, the Stranger also showed up and was confronted with Gehn's assistant, who guarded the cage. The assistant however was darted with a sleeping poison and fell unconscious by a Moiety who then jammed the mechanism with a Moiety dagger.

The cage remained out of order until finally Atrus linked to Riven, to find the Stranger and Catherine. Soon after it was sucked into the Star Fissure.
