Gahreesen (sometimes translated Garrison) is an Age that was used by the Guild of Maintainers, mainly for training purposes for an elite group started in the mid 8000s DE. It was also a high-security prison and a center for research and development. There is DRC documentation for Gahreesen.

[edit] Etymology
"Gahreesen" (garEsen[?]) is derived from three distinct D'ni words[1]:
- gahro (garo[?]): adj. great, mighty
- ahreeuh (arEu[?]): v. to protect
- senahren (senaren[?]): n. building/structure
I.e., a "mighty structure for protection" (or, simply a "fortress"). As this is close in meaning and writing to the English "garrison", the DRC and others frequently use the latter translation.
[edit] Outdoors
The outside parts of Gahreesen (an area designated by the DRC as Gahreesen III; suspended for safety reasons) are mostly inaccessible, though much of the stunning, beautiful nature is visible. Dangerous predators are said to live in the forests of Gahreesen, and their screams can sometimes be heard.
[edit] Security
Rather uniquely, most if not all of Gahreesen's buildings rotate around their own axis, preventing links being written to anywhere else but a building's center, and have their doors equipped with strong security systems. Avoiding unwanted intruders was apparently a high priority, perhaps in an effort to keep the advanced knowledge and skills within the guild and to keep prisoners incarcerated. Above and behind the link-in spot is even a small window, sometimes referred to as the "sniper window", which may indeed have been used for the purpose of guarding the entrance.
The KI can be retrieved in this Age, and is required to unlock and open many of the buildings' doors. Near the time of the Fall of D'ni there were plans to distribute KIs to the general populace.
As an additional security measure, a beetle known as the Ink Beetle that was native to the age was kept in the complex. They would devour any linking books in the complex. They seem to have died out in this area, as explorers can enter with their Relto books.
[edit] The Wall
The Wall (Gahreesen II in DRC terms; at restoration phase 4) was used for training members of the Guild of Maintainers. It is a large climbable wall, with shutters that activate upon climbing onto them, throwing you back down to the base of the wall. The shutters can be set on two systems, each setting up shutters for the opposite side of the Wall. The training was probably done by two teams, both setting up a 'maze' for the other. The trick was to remember where the shutters are and try to get to the top of the wall before a member of the other team does. Upon reaching the top of the Wall, you are linked to a special Maintainers version of the Nexus. How exactly this was done, is unknown.
[edit] 2004 Cyan rendition
In Uru Live (2003) during Prologue, the Wall was briefly available before the cancellation. A thread in the Myst & Uru Obsession Forums from back then includes screenshots.
