Riven's Temple Island hosted a five-sided room typically known as the gate room (also rotating room or beetle room), built by order of Gehn.

[edit] Purpose

The exact purpose of the gate room is not entirely clear. Its complex technique of opening and closing doors through a system of gates that needed to be opened through a rather complicated operation appears to be a security device of Gehn's, restricting access to the areas it leads to, most importantly the Great Dome. However, the Stranger is known to have figured out the mechanism.

The room itself could be rotated by pressing one of four buttons, and depending on how it is rotated, it would link pairs of different entrances altogether.

[edit] Design

Keeping people away from the dome, however, was probably not its only purpose. The architecture of the room is filled with symbolism, so it may also have served as some sort of place of worship. As stated above, it was pentagonal, and in each of the five corners there was a big pillar made out of a tree trunk, where the trees are representing the wood which the paper of the books are made of. The ceiling of the room consists of a surface that resembles a star lit sky, with a shape hanging in the middle, possibly resembling a pen nib. On each of the three walls which don't have doors, there is a short prayer written in D'ni, worshiping Gehn. English transcripts of these texts can be found here.

The location of the gate room makes these religious aspects peculiar; the villagers of Riven did not have access to this area of Riven, so it is difficult to see who Gehn intended to influence with this temple-like architecture.

[edit] Stained glass illustrations

On each pillar there is a sculpture of the golden beetle, which was the source of the ink made to write these books. These beetle sculptures can be opened to reveal a peephole through which a series of icon-like images depicting Gehn's and Riven's mutual history can be seen.
