The Great Zero (also Rezeero) refers to the origin point of a cylindrical coordinate system (Wikipedia) for an Age.

As was the custom of the Ronay, a group of members of the Guild of Surveyors was sent first to an Age to establish the Great Zero, usually based on a prominent natural landmark of an Age, and the line emanating from it (usually toward Magnetic North, but sometimes towards another major landmark) to aid in navigation, construction, etc.

The Great Zero in the D'ni caverns (Image:KI angle icon.png 0 · Image:KI distance icon.png 0 · Image:KI elevation icon.png 0  ) is atop the pinnacle of the island of Ae'gura. A monument was built on the site in 0 DE (7656 BC). Near the time of the Fall of D'ni the Great Zero contained machinery and technology which, once calibrated, mapped large parts of the city to unique coordinates and allowed locating objects, such KIs, into the system.

[edit] Technology

The exact workings of the Great Zero are not yet known. However, there are some theories on certain aspects of the machine.

  • The large crystals may be a way to siphon off extra energy from the Great Zero's neutrino dispenser to prevent a charge from building up and harming arriving visitors.

[edit] Recalibration

Recalibration of the Great Zero was done by explorers collecting running various marker missions available in the Great Zero Calibration Center. Completing these missions contributed to the calibration of the Great Zero's systems.

The state of the recalibration efforts was indicated by the Calibration Image, posted in the Great Zero by Victor Laxman. On June 27th, 2007, the recalibration of the Great Zero was complete and it was activated. Since the activation, a blue line of light sweeps through the city at regular intervals.

[edit] Location

The Great Zero is above the Guild Hall in Ae'gura, high above the city. As a place, the Great Zero is divided into three areas.

[edit] Great Zero Observation

Great Zero Observation (sometimes Great Zero Antechamber or GZO) is a small chamber that overlooks the Great Zero machinery and courtyard. There is a DRC notebook here, as well as an upload machine. The upload machine will upgrade a KI to find the first set of Great Zero markers and is where you upload the markers when you find them.

The Great Zero Observation is accessed via linking books found the neighborhood Nexus rooms, or through the City book found in Relto.

[edit] Great Zero Courtyard

The Great Zero Courtyard is below the Antechamber and contains the main machinery for the Great Zero (as shown above). On the floor around the machinery is the Great Zero Map. There is also an upload machine here where you can upgrade a KI for a second set of Great Zero markers, and a Nexus book. At the far end of the Courtyard are the doors to the Calibration Center.

The courtyard is inaccessible until you upload a completed set of Great Zero markers into the upload machine in the Great Zero Observation chamber. Then, a link to the Courtyard is added to your Public Links section in Nexus.

Past the doors at the end of the Courtyard is the Great Zero Calibration Center. This contains the calibration image as well as for four Great Zero Maintenance Units. Accessing these Maintenance Units allows an explorer to choose marker missions. It is the first room in the complex that the neutrino stream enters.

The doors to the Calibration Center only open at the approach of someone who has uploaded both sets of Great Zero Markers.

[edit] Etymology

Rezeero (rezEro[?]) is not a case of the DRC using faux D'ni (that is, zeero is, unlike previously assumed, completely unrelated to the English word zero). The actual meaning of this term, however, has yet to be deciphered.[1]

In November 2007 (Leevofo 9663), explorer-designed stained glass was put in some neighborhoods above the Great Zero linking book. It says regaro zEro[?] (literally the great zeero.) Though in D'ni the adjective usually follows the noun, this usage is correct[2].

The following section is written from an OOC point of view. Events and elements surrounding the Myst Universe are regarded as fictional.
In the expansion pack To D'ni (and thus in Complete Chronicles), the Maintenance Units each provided a single marker mission, of which the completion would activate one of the facets of the Great Zero coordinates. This was instead of the 14 marker missions that are available in Uru Live.
