The red-breasted grossamery is a large bird native to Edanna, covered in brightly-coloured plumage (including a crest of feathers crowning the head) and may have a wingspan of 6 to 7 meters. Its powerful back legs end in grasping talons, allowing the grossamery to collect its primary food source: the cage of ripened fruits found within the Nemel Lotus.
From what little observation there has been of grossameries in the wild, they seem to be nesting birds with a hutch of four to five eggs at a time, each of a greenish-blue hue. The hatchlings are of similar colouration to their adult counterparts, though distinctly stumpier and not yet capable of flight.
The puzzle Atrus set up for his sons in this Age relies on the grossamery's regular harvest, as the final step required summoning the bird to carry the cage (and whoever may be in it) from the lower swamp back up to Deadwood Ridge at the pinnacle of the Eden Tree. The grossamery played yet another role upon the Stranger's visit to Edanna, as it had to be freed from the huge Venus Flytrap that Saavedro had rigged to capture it.
