[edit] History
The 18 Major Guilds were founded by Ri'neref and modeled somewhat after those of Garternay, although dedicated to Yahvo and a higher purpose than what Ri'neref saw as self-aggrandizement of the older Guilds. They were also stricter and less flexible in their nature. Their creation was celebrated on the Day of the Circle in 100 DE (7556 BC). The Major Guilds were eventually open only to the highest classes as the price of enrollment rose, and only men could be members. These guilds played a major role in government after Kerath's abdication.
The first Minor Guilds were established in the 1100s in the reign of King Mararon as part of a general improvement in the educational system. In 3500 DE (4156 BC) women were first allowed to join these guilds.
After 6970 DE (686 BC) the headquarters of the Guild Council were located in the Guild Hall built over the Tomb of the Great King.
[edit] Riven
Gehn also created his own Guild system on at least one Age, Riven, its members copyists who he was beginning to teach the basics of the Art. After he was betrayed by Catherine and trapped on Riven, he reorganized this system into five guilds: Bookmakers, Builders, Educators, Maintainers, and Surveyors. It is very unlikely this survived his isolation from the Rivenese people.
[edit] Releeshahn
The Guild system continued onto Releeshahn by the D'ni survivors, but how similar it is to that of D'ni is unknown. It is not known either if all of the 18 of them had been refounded, or only the most necessary of them. Atrus mentions specifically the Stone Masons and the Mechanists.
[edit] Present day
- Main article: Present-day Guilds
As part of the DRC's restoration effort and the associated influx of explorers, a number of customary guilds have been created by humans, roughly following the similar system set up by the D'ni. Those new guilds include Greeters, Cartographers, Maintainers, Messengers and Writers. The symbols of these guilds can be found here.
