J'nanin was the lesson Age created by Atrus to begin teaching his sons about the importance of balance in the Art of Writing. It served as the hub for the rest of the Ages seen in Myst III: Exile: Amateria, Edanna, Voltaic, and Narayan.

[edit] Environment

J'nanin consists of an island in a vast sea. The island, in turn, is made up of large rocky outcroppings along the edges, and a small lake in the middle. There is very little vegetation on the island, and the only notable animal there is probably the Squee, though it may have been imported from Edanna.

Four "tusks" are built on the island, one for each Book. The Book for Amateria is locked in a tusk near the shore, its entrance blocked by a barrel of sorts. The Voltaic Book is in another tusk, opened through the use of all the light-emitting poles scattered around the Age. Edanna's tusk is, in turn, reached by climbing over a large sound-sensitive plant (the Barnacle Moss). The last, and largest, tusk (also called the Main Tusk) is built in the center of the lake. It contains three telescopes used (among other things) for viewing the island, the Book of Narayan, locked in a mechanism opened by retrieving a "glyph" of sorts from the three Lesson Ages. Also, there is a device in the ceiling that shows recorded messages from Atrus to his sons (although these messages were partially overwritten by Saavedro). At the foot of the main tusk is a small house, containing a greenhouse of sorts (perhaps used to grow food), a laboratory/living room, and an elevator up to the main tusk.

[edit] Saavedro's Imprisonment

After Sirrus and Achenar all but destroyed Narayan, they linked back to J'nanin, followed by Saavedro. When he confronted them with their deeds, they laughed and tied him up, and linked to Myst, burning their Books after them. Saavedro, now imprisoned on J'nanin with no direct way back to Narayan, remained trapped here for 20 years, before The Stranger eventually solved Atrus' Lesson Ages and opened the way back to Narayan, which had survived.
