A Journey cloth.
A Journey cloth.

A Journey cloth is a cloth found in the ages Yeesha chooses for her Journey. Touching all the cloths in an age will unlock the Journey door, giving access to the linking tunnel behind the door. It is possible that Yeesha created the Journey cloths inspired from the unrelated Serenian Journey Cloths.

We will show you remnants, pieces of the tapestry, pieces of the Journey. Find these remnants, these Journeys. Seven; seven in each age.

The cloths are meant to represent pieces of the journey to D'ni, according to Yeesha. Although she said there are seven in each age, that is not precisely true. There are instead seven in each part of the Journey, and most parts only include one age; however, Eder Gira and Eder Kemo, two different ages, have seven cloths between them because they comprise a single part of the Journey.

Though they are usually called Journey cloths, they are sometimes called hand cloths to differentiate them from the similar cloths in other ages. Both Yeesha and Zandi simply call them journeys.

[edit] Properties

Journey cloths have linking properties that bend the D'ni race's knowledge of the Art. When a cloth is touched, it "remembers" who touched it and how many cloths from that part of the Journey the toucher has already found, and it glows: one segment per found cloth. Each finger counts as one segment, and the palm and thumb is divided into three. It also makes a distinctive noise.

When the cloth is touched, that position is saved in the linking book in the explorer's Relto bookshelf. The next time the book is opened, a bookmark with the hand symbol on it appears on the page before the linking panel. Touching the bookmark will link the user to the last cloth he touched in that age.

Journey cloths are stuck onto objects very well and cannot be removed easily. When the DRC removed one for study, another one quickly took its place.
