The term "lesson ages" typically refers to the four Ages that Atrus wrote for his sons, Sirrus and Achenar.

These Ages, each of which built around a specific phrase, were designed by Atrus to show his sons the underlying concepts that influenced the Writing of Ages.

[edit] J'nanin

Main article: J'nanin

J'nanin served as a 'hub' of the Lesson Ages. One had to activate some mechanisms and gain access to them. After completing the tests, one could link back to J'nanin and watch Atrus' recorded message of congratulations. The structure of J'nanin is similar the 'places of protection' seen on Myst.

[edit] Amateria

Main article: Amateria

Amateria's phrase was "dynamic forces spur change". An Age with Oriental-style architecture, Amateria was covered in tracks that a large crystal sphere could roll down. By adjusting the various mechanisms that represented dynamic forces in the Age, the ball could eventually make it unharmed throughout the entire set of tracks.

[edit] Edanna

Main article: Edanna

Edanna's phrase was "nature encourages mutual dependence". This Age consisted of a giant tree growing directly out of the ocean. Inside the tree there were several distinct ecosystem levels. The goal of the Age was to show how ecosystems rely on all parts of themselves, and the Age could only be navigated by learning and using the relationships of the different organisms.

[edit] Voltaic

Main article: Voltaic

Voltaic's phrase was "energy powers future motion". This Age consisted of an island with several natural sources of energy and multiple machine systems designed to take advantage of it. The goal of the Age was to learn how to control and direct energy in order to power systems, which could then be used to work other systems.

[edit] Narayan

Main article: Narayan

Narayan was the final Lesson Age. Its phrase was "balanced systems stimulate civilizations". While Narayan's ecosystem was not fragile, it required constant maintenance by the civilization who lived there in order to survive. The Narayani traditions and civilizations were built around maintaining the system, and because they maintained it, they could survive and continue their own civilization.
