Linking chambers were protective capsules or cubicles built around a link-in point. It intended to isolate the explorer from an Age's environment during linking. Usually however, link-in points could be simple caves.

The cage of the Temple Island on Riven built by Gehn, was arguably a kind of linking chamber, hoping to trap Atrus should he decide to link to that Age. Selenitic had a what could be such a chamber shaped like a giant spaceship, identical to the one found in Myst.

Nara linking chambers were written into Spire and Haven by Catherine, as a means for Atrus and his family to visit the exiled Sirrus and Achenar while ensuring that the brothers would still have no means to escape their prisons.

Both chambers share similar features:

  • Thick bars that separate the prisoner from his visitor
  • Padded benches
  • A revolving drawer for passing small objects through the bars
  • A secured cabinet, in the visitor side of the chamber, containing a linking book back to Tomahna
  • A hand-cranked, air-powered horn to notify the prisoner that he has a visitor waiting in the chamber
