Common abbreviations denoting the Myst universe

When referring to the Myst "franchise", "universe" or "fandom", i.e. everything revolving around the Myst series of computer games, the series of novels, the D'ni and related civilizations, as well as the fans to this entire fictional compound, fans often use short abbreviations.

Traditionally, MRD is the most common. This is short for "Myst, Riven, D'ni". With the release of games such as Myst III: Exile, however, this has become slightly inaccurate as it does not appear to encompass everything.

Many fans have therefore simply chronologically (by release of the game title, with the exception of D'ni) added one character after another: MRDE for Myst, Riven, D'ni, Myst III: Exile, MRDEU for Myst, Riven, D'ni, Myst III: Exile, Uru: Ages Beyond Myst and MRDEUR for Myst, Riven, D'ni, Myst III: Exile, Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, Myst IV: Revelation. For the last one, some semi-jokingly swap the letters around to be non-chronological but more memorable: MURDER covers everything from 1993's Myst to 2004's Myst IV: Revelation; however, with the release of Myst V: End of Ages, this entire practice became increasingly impractical, and it is nowhere near as obvious what the seven letters MRDEURE would have stood for.

It may be more fitting not to list individual games, but only significant "milestones". For example, Myst is relevant as it was the first time a significant populace was exposed to the ideas of D'ni, linking books and Atrus's family. D'ni plays a role due to linking books and other advanced technologies the D'ni had that humans don't, or at the time didn't. Finally, Uru is important as it takes everything to an entire new step, reuniting fans all around the world and enabling them to experience stories together, and even get involved in being part of new stories as they occur. Resulting abbreviations such as MDU (or MDM, referring to Mudpie), however, never gained much traction.
