MYSTlore:News and Events
From MYSTlore
News and Events is a recent feature in MYSTlore that allows editors to jot down events, and visitors to keep track of them – whether recent or upcoming.
- On the Main Page, the News and Events section lists a small number of recent and upcoming events.
- A complete list can be found at News and Events. For each month, there is a subpage, such as Template:News and Events/2006-12 for December 2006.
- Events can be downloaded or subscribed to as a calendar that integrates with several common desktop calendaring applications. This means that you can even be reminded of something that's coming up.
Events can be both IC and OOC. They can be distinguished by editors through categorization

[edit] Subscriptions
The exact instructions of subscribing to MYSTlore's events depends on what desktop calendaring application you use.
[edit] Apple iCal (Mac OS X 10.2 and newer)
The process in iCal is fairly straightforward:
- On MYSTlore's Main Page, there should be a subscribe to calendar link, like this: Calendar: Subscribe. Click that link.
- iCal should open, and a sheet should pop out of iCal's main window, reading "Subscribe to:" and with the URL webcal://www.mystlore.com/Events.ics filled in. Click "Subscribe".
- You can now enter a title of your choice (such as just "MYSTlore", or "Myst-related events", or anything you like). We recommend that you enable automatic Refresh. A setting of every 15 minutes should work just fine; it puts very little stress on the connection. Also, leave the latter two settings off, so neither alarms nor To Do items are removed. In any case, you can change any of these settings later on.
- Finally, as with any calendar in iCal, you can pick a color.
Done! Events should now show up. If you don't see any, switch to Month view and pick a month such as December 2006.
[edit] Google Calendar (web browser)
- Log in to Google Calendar using your Google account (if you have Gmail, for example, that same account will work).
- In the blue Calendars section to the left side, click the + sign next to Other Calendars.
- An Add Other Calendar UI should come up. Switch to the section named Public Calendar Address.
- In the text field labelled Public Calendar Address:, paste webcal://www.mystlore.com/Events.ics, and click Add.
- Finally, as with any calendar in Google Calendar, you can pick a different color and give it a name of your choice, such as "MYSTlore", or "Myst-related events", or anything you like.
Done! Events should now show up. If you don't see any, switch to Month view and pick a month such as December 2006.
[edit] Mozilla Sunbird (Windows 2000 and newer)
Sunbird currently does not register for the webcal:// protocol, which means the process is a little more manual than it ought to be, but still quite simple:
- On MYSTlore's Main Page, there should be a subscribe to calendar link, like this: Calendar: Subscribe. Don't click that link; rather, copy its location (not required).
- Open Mozilla Sunbird.
- In the File menu, choose Subscribe to Remote Calendar….
- In the wizard that comes up, choose On the Network, Format: iCalendar (ICS) and paste the URL in Location:, or manually put webcal://www.mystlore.com/Events.ics. Give the calendar a name of your choice (such as just "MYSTlore", or "Myst-related events", or anything you like), and pick a color if you wish.
Done! Events should now show up. If you don't see any, switch to Month view and pick a month such as December 2006.
[edit] Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (Windows 2000 and newer)
Outlook, unfortunately, provides no full support for calendar subscriptions. By default, you can only download a calendar and import it, and it has trouble opening the format produced by MYSTlore. If you wish to use Outlook for this, you should download the RemoteCalendars extension. The latest version of RemoteCalendars that is known to work can be found here.
- You will need to have the .NET Framework Runtime 1.1 installed.
- Download the file named RemoteCalendarsSetup-4.72-.NET-1.1.msi.
- Once finished, open the .msi file. A setup should open. Agree to the license agreement, pick a destination, and finish installation – the default settings should be fine.
- If you already have Outlook running, exit and relaunch it now. Otherwise, open Outlook.
- An initial configuration dialog for RemoteCalendars should appear. The only relevant setting is whether you'd like all remote calendars – such as the one MYSTlore provides – updated whenever Outlook is run. This is up to you, but is generally a good choice, unless you plan on having many such calendars.
- Go to the Calendar section of Outlook, and create a new calendar folder. Name it "MYSTlore", or "Myst-related events", or anything you like.
- A new toolbar should have appeared. One button in it (typically the first) should ahve a green plus in front of blue "RC" writing). Press this button in order to add a subscription.
- The URL should be: webcal://www.mystlore.com/Events.ics.
- The name, again, can be anything you like.
- The Outlook folder to add it to should be the on you just created.
- The remaining settings are up to you. We recommend leaving the checkboxes off.
Done! Events should now show up. If you don't see any, switch to Month view and pick a month such as December 2006.
[edit] Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 (Windows 2000 and newer)
Unlike Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007 has built-in support for calendar subscriptions, making for process that is quite straightforward:
- On MYSTlore's Main Page, there should be a subscribe to calendar link, like this: Calendar: Subscribe. Click that link. You might receive a security warning of sorts about whether you wish to permit Windows Calendar to open (allow this).
- Microsoft Outlook should open, and a dialog should appear in front of its main window, titled "Add this Internet Calendar to Outlook and subscribe to updates?", with the URL http://www.mystlore.com/Events.ics underneath, and the option to go to an Advanced mode, or to confirm (Yes or No). You can simply click Yes here, and it should download all events and display them in a calendar. The options offered in Advanced… aren't particularly relevant, and are mostly set correctly.
- However, you might want to give the calendar a different title of your choice, such as just "MYSTlore", or "Myst-related events", or anything you like. You can always rename later on, however.
Done! Outlook should proceed to download events, and they should soon show up. If you don't see any, switch to Month view and pick a month such as December 2006.
[edit] Microsoft Windows Calendar (Windows Vista)
The process in Windows Calendar mostly mimics that of iCal, and is equally straightforward:
- On MYSTlore's Main Page, there should be a subscribe to calendar link, like this: Calendar: Subscribe. Click that link. You might receive a security warning of sorts about whether you wish to permit Windows Calendar to open (allow this).
- Windows Calendar should open, and a dialog should appear in front of its main window, titled "Subscribe to a Calendar", with a text field labeled "Calendar to subscribe to:" and the URL webcal://www.mystlore.com/Events.ics filled in. Click "Next".
- A progress bar will briefly appear. After a successful connection, you can enter a calendar name of your choice (such as just "MYSTlore", or "Myst-related events", or anything you like). We recommend that you set an update interval. A setting of every 15 minutes should work just fine; it puts very little stress on the connection. Also, do include reminders and tasks. In any case, you can change any of these settings later on.
- Finally, as with any calendar in Windows Calendar, you can pick a color.
Done! Events should now show up. If you don't see any, switch to Month view and pick a month such as December 2006.
