Markers are a D'ni technology whose main purpose during the D'ni era is unclear at this stage. There are two known types of markers, called Great Zero Markers and Maintainer Markers. Markers only appear to the person who is currently searching for them, and found markers are counted on the other ring of the KI.

[edit] Great Zero Markers

These are markers that were generated by the Great Zero and used as part of the calibration process. There are two types of Great Zero Markers.

[edit] Great Zero Markers

The generic Great Zero markers appear in various places in the D'ni caverns, with the majority appearing in Ae'gura. These markers appear to explorers after upgrading their KI using the upgrade machine in the Great Zero Observation chamber. They are red and emit a distinctive 'pulsing' sound when an explorer is near one.

When an explorer gets within 25 feet of a marker, the marker becomes visible and the marker button on their KI will flash red. The marker is registered by pushing the button, at which point they disappear. Once an explorer has registered one set, they can upload them to the upload machine to get access to the Great Zero Courtyard. After gathering a second set, they can be uploaded to game access to the Great Zero Calibration Center.

[edit] Calibration Great Zero markers

Calibration markers appear after selecting one of the marker missions from the Maintenance Units in the Great Zero Calibration Center. There purpose during the restoration was to assist in the recalibration of the Great Zero. These markers are white, make no sound and are visible at great distances. To register one of these markers, an explorer must pass their body through the marker.

[edit] Maintainer Markers

These markers were used by the Maintainers Guild. They appear to be identical to Calibration Great Zero Markers, with the possibility that the Great Zero actually created them. They can appear in any Age.

One of the possible uses of the Maintainer Markers were as a training tool for recruits in the guild. The markers would be placed in different specified by a person, and they would then be captured based on one of three criteria:

  1. This involved two teams that would attempt to collect all of the markers, with the KI registering the first team to collect the marker. The markers could vanish after a certain amount of time or once all of them had been registered. One limitation of this method was that the markers must be in the same Age.
  2. This involved two teams with each time collecting the markers with the winner determined by the team that had the most markers registered to them when the time limit expires. Unlike the above criteria, markers can be registered to the other team even after they have been collected by a team. Although like the above criteria, this also has the limitation of requiring the markers to be in the same Age.
  3. The last method was for a single person to search for the markers and register each one as they find them. The markers can carry text, but don't necessarily need to. These missions were sent via an invitation through the KI. Unlike the previous two methods, markers for such missions could be placed in any Age.

When the Great Zero was activated, the DRC activated the ability for explorers to create their own marker missions of the third type.
