Marten is an explorer, known for producing D'ni-themed music videos, the History of the Great Tree documentaries, which chronicle happenings in Prologue, and Rel.to. He is a member of The Great Tree.
In April 2008, Marten was elected the Guildmaster of the modern Guild of Messengers.
