The Mazerunner was constructed by Atrus as a means of transportation through the caverns beneath the Selenitic Age. It was based on D'ni mining-transport technology[1] and resembled a small wagon that travelled on rails.

The rails could be turned to change paths. The maze could be navigated with the help of auditory cues corresponding to the compass headings.

[edit] Purpose

Why Atrus constructed miles of underground tracks that went nowhere or why he chose to use such a subtle and bewildering navigation method remain a mystery, especially due to the fact that the maze had to be navigated twice. However since Atrus could Write man-made things into his Ages, he could do that with the maze system structures as well, minimizing the effort of building all of it singlehandedly.

It's assumed that Atrus had more important plans about those tunnels but didn't eventually complete them. Even if Atrus wrote of this in the Selenitic Journal, much of that journal (including, presumably, the pages dealing with the Mazerunner) has suffered an unfortunate unexplained ink fading which has rendered them illegible.

[edit] Background

The following section is written from an OOC point of view. Events and elements surrounding the Myst Universe are regarded as fictional.

The appearance of the Mazerunner differs significantly between the original Myst and realMyst.
