Mechanical is one of the many ages written by Atrus while he lived on Myst Island. It currently consists of three small islands and a large rotating fortress built between them. The fortress was originally built by Atrus and the age's inhabitants in order to fight off the Black Ships. More recently it seems that Sirrus and Achenar had taken over the fortress. None of the age's original inhabitants are known to still be alive.

[edit] History

Originally there existed a large island with three hills, and a large city between them populated by many peaceful people. They had built a sentry post on the east coast, expecting visitors to come. They had no means of transportation and could only wait for friend or foe. Friends did come, but so too came the Black Ships from 'beyond the horizon'. The sky turned dark and overcast, as the ships violently attacked the city, leaving it in ruins. As the ships left, city sank into the water, leaving only the three hills above the surface. Of that city, there were only nine survivors. The overcast sky did not go away. It was said that it would only go away once the Black Ships had been destroyed.

Nine years later Atrus wrote a link to these ruins. One of these survivors, who, according to his comments, noticeably reminded him of Emmit, told Atrus the story of their city, and warned Atrus that the Black Ships were said to return in one year's time, to finish the destruction they had started. Upon hearing this, Atrus decided to help these people. Atrus and his sons helped the survivors build a fortress for protection between the three islands, above the ruins of the dead city, to protect the survivors. The next attack was thwarted and the black ships were forced to leave, however they were not destroyed, so the sky remained overcast and dreary.

It is not known what happened after this, but it is clear that Sirrus and Achenar later installed themselves as rulers of the fortress, and eventually had the inhabitants all killed. There is evidence in Sirrus's bedroom in Stoneship Age that the brothers at some point joined the Black Ships. However, the sky is now blue indicating that the Black Ships have been destroyed.

[edit] Background

The following section is written from an OOC point of view. Events and elements surrounding the Myst Universe are regarded as fictional.
  • The part of Mechanical that is seen in the game consists of a large, rotating fortress. In a 2006 article in Make Magazine, Robyn Miller stated that this fortress was based on a design for a custom Dungeon & Dragons-inspired game his brother Rand had made a few years earlier. Two pictures of the original fortress can be found here
  • According to The Joining, Mechanical Age was inhibited not only by human-like individuals; large semi-sentient pink monsters were used by the Black Ship pirates for hard and heavy works. The Ebony Cardinal was served by tall slim humanoids, such as his Speaker.
  • In realMyst, due to constraints, the day-night circle was not included in the finished game and (like Channelwood) the Age remains in constant daytime.
