Black Moiety

The Moiety, or Black Moiety, were a group of rebel Rivenese with the intention of overthrowing Gehn and retaking their home Age, Riven. Inspired by Atrus and Catherine's victory over Gehn, a number of Rivenese came to believe that Atrus, a true god, had stripped away Gehn's power and chosen Catherine to be his divine consort. They became rebels against Gehn and dwelt in a network of caves, from which they would emerge to sabotage construction or steal food, wearing ritual costumes which frightened those still under Gehn's rule. Their symbol was the Moiety dagger that stood near the Star Fissure, taken as a holy symbol since it was 'created' by Catherine against Gehn.
One of their beliefs was that some day Catherine would return to overthrow Gehn and bring them to paradise. Thirty years after she left, Catherine did return, unsuspecting of her messianic role, but emboldening the Moiety nonetheless. She wrote a new Age for them which they called Tay, and after the Stranger trapped Gehn in a Prison Age, she led the villagers to the rebel Age before Riven finally collapsed. The Rivenese were one people again, free from Gehn's dominion.
