[edit] Myst miniseries
Rumors and speculation regarding a possible Myst-based movie have been around for years. There has always been high demand for one in the Myst community, and hopes were first raised in April of 2002 with the announcement [1] that Sci-Fi channel, with Mandalay Entertainment and Cyan were developing a four hour miniseries based on Myst. Jim Stephenson, webmaster of the now-defunct Riven Unofficial Homepage, provided further information [2] regarding the project's origins and scope after speaking with Cyan president Tony Fryman.
The series was said to be slated for a 2004 release, however; on March 25 of 2004 it was announced [3] that Myst fan Scott Gruber got the following response from Mandalay Entertainment:| “ | Per your email, if you would still like to see Myst get made for the Sci-Fi Channel, I suggest you have your user groups make your opinion known to the Sci Fi Channel. Otherwise, it is on hold. | „ |
Disappointed fans pressed Cyan for answers regarding the project's cancellation. On January 24, 2007, RAWA provided a response [4], implying that Cyan were unhappy with the direction the project had been taking.
[edit] Myst movie rumors
Since the cancellation of the miniseries, there has been a persistent rumor that James Cameron and Steven Spielberg were bidding for the rights to make a Myst movie. When asked about it in a MystWorlds video interview [5], Rand Miller neither confirmed nor denied it, but admitted that it sounded like a rumor to him.
[edit] Myst movie petition
At some point after the cancellation of the miniseries, an online petition was created to drum up interest in a Myst movie and try to convince Cyan to begin such a project. As of April 2008, there are over 800 signatures. There does not appear to be a time limit on the petition, as it is still accepting signatures.
[edit] The Book of Atrus Project
In 2006, a group formed to discuss the creation of a fan-made CGI Myst movie based on the first novel, The Book of Atrus. Out of these discussions, a team began work on concepts, three dimensional models, advertising and even some preliminary voice casting for the role of Atrus. Permission to proceed was sought from Cyan's legal department while work began on the first scene. The reply came from Tony Fryman that Cyan was unable to allow the Project to continue, as a third party owned the movie rights. It is commonly thought that the owner of the rights may be Disney.
[edit] Myst: The Motion Picture / Project Passage
Most recently, a teaser website has gotten fans excited, particularly after hints that the project is endorsed by Cyan. Now known as Project Passage and very clearly affiliated through a foreword by Rand Miller, the movie production continues to gain a lot of attention.
