The Nexus (also: MT, short for Mass Transit) refers both to an Age, as well as a machine within it, which is the only notable feature of that Age.

The Age was created only to host the machine and the books, and therefore the traveler who links there is found in a perfectly enclosed room with only a machine. The rest of the Age is impossible to be explored and everything else about it remains unknown.

[edit] Usage

The machine has picked out the linking book for the Ferry Terminal location in the Ae'gura distract of the City, and the linking panel can be seen.

Primarily, the Nexus was created because the D'ni believed that linking from one place to another in the same Age was impossible. Travelling the huge distances in the City of D'ni by foot would have been ridiculously unfeasible, and vehicles didn't help convenience sufficiently. The Nexus acts as a proxy: Nexus terminals (also: MT stations) throughout the city can register a person's location, authenticated through the KI, and in the future, that person can get back to the same location through the Nexus machine's City Locations list. For unknown reasons, the registration can also be undone afterwards.

[edit] Interface

The machine's interface also provides such details as the current population of D'ni, i.e. the amount of people simultaneously travelling through the City, and it has additional lists of Private Links, Personal Links and Public Links, letting one link to an Age explicitly shared by someone else, for example.

Since access to KIs was highly restricted at first, it is unclear whether access to Nexus terminals was available to the general public, whether it was added later, or not at all.

After a target location has been selected, the machine will automatically find the appropriate linking book, opening it up to reveal the linking panel.

[edit] DRCresearch

As part of their KI work the DRC has been able to enable Nexus functionality as well. It appears that some DRC refer to the Nexus as "MT" [1], presumably short for "mass transit" [2].
