Open beta is the current phase of Myst Online: Uru Live pre-release testing. It is frequently referred to as sneak peek.

Unlike its predecessor, Uru Live Preview, open beta removes the requirement of invitations; that is, anyone can take part immediately.

Open beta has launched on December 12[1][2], and, is apparently scheduled to close again on December 18th[3]. Following a vault wipe, it is scheduled to be superseded by the Preview of Uru Live on December 20th.

This beta is "open" only to GameTap subscribers. Previous Uru Live Preview invitees will continue to be able to participate. In countries where GameTap itself is not yet available (but Uru Live will be), such as Germany, no additional people compared to the Preview are able to join, and in GameTap-supported countries, such as the United States, people need to pay a subscription fee to GameTap if they don't already, even if they only intend to play the pre-release of Uru Live — however, due to a "99 cents for the first month" deal, and due to the short length of this beta phase, this essentially amounts to a very small price to pay.

Because of these limitations, RAWA has instead referred to this beta as ajar[4]:

[..] the "beta plan" became more complicated with the "Preview" and the "GameTap sneak peek", neither of which are "closed" because they don't require a signed NDA, but they aren't fully "open" either, so I guess they're best described as "ajar".
