The relyimah (Terahnee for "the unseen") were the slaves of the Terahnee civilization, usually remaining unseen and below the consciousness of most Terahnee. They were taken as children from their home Ages and brutally trained by the P'aarli in their tasks: the operation of machinery for transportation and entertainment, the harvesting of crops, and food preparation among other things. Relyimah were neutered and the sexes kept separate. Although the Terahnee did not know of it, the slaves had some measure of independent society, with hidden leaders for each household.

This changed when Atrus's party of explorers from D'ni entered Terahnee, bringing with them bacteria that proved deadly, first affecting the relyimah and than the P'aarli and the Terahnee masters. The relyimah proved more resistant, and those who survived were now free from their slavery. The P'aarli attempted to reconquer them but were defeated by a relyimah army under the leadership of Ymur. Ymur went on to attempt to subjugate his fellow relyimah but was killed before he could succeed.

The relyimah renamed Terahnee Devokan, "hope", and would attempt to build a new society on the basis of D'ni laws Atrus brought.
