Rime is one of the many Ages written by Atrus while he lived on Myst Island. Sometimes called the Snow Age[Citation needed] due to its permanently winter-esque weather, it served mainly as an experimental lab of sorts with a mechanism for inducing an aurora-like phenomenon of heavenly lights.

[edit] History

The main purpose of the Age was to hold a crystal viewer of other Ages, a technique Atrus had been exploring but was unable to implement without the cold temperatures of Rime. He brought with him some machinery from Selenitic and Sirrus who helped him with the first phases of the construction.

Atrus was at first interested at the heavenly lights that could be seen at a distance and would like to observe them and find their cause.

After completing a tunnel below a hill, Atrus brought Achenar with him and built a shaft to the hilltop, the observation post and three towers above the frozen waters powered by a generator: power was conducted directly through the saline sea alleviating the need for stringing wires.

Finally, Atrus and his sons experimented with the discharges they artificially caused with the towers, watching the heavenly effects. Catherine eventually visited Rime and tried to help Atrus with the combination that would allow them see Riven. Catherine discovered the correct combination and left Atrus a note with it but it is not known if he finally found it.

Atrus allowed the Stranger to visit the age after he freed him from K'veer.

Years later, Atrus visited Rime again and used the crystal viewer to see how his sons fared in Spire and Haven. However it didn't show much and he considered rebuilding the mechanism, which he finally did, in Tomahna.

After that, the Age was probably abandoned, save at least one time when he linked to fetch some spare crystals for his new crystal viewer, but an electromagnetic storm made the linking book unable to establish back.

During his absence, Sirrus escaped Spire and abducted Yeesha from Tomahna.

[edit] Geography

Map of the Age

The age seems to consist of floating icebergs or snowy islands.

The island Atrus linked to consisted of a small hill under which he opened and built a hut antechamber and a tunnel-corridor behind it which lead to the elevator shaft. Because of the low temperature, they constructed a furnace in the antechamber. A room behind the elevator shaft held the crystal viewer. The elevator would ascend to the hill top and the observatory, and Atrus' desk.

Three towers were built not far from the islet. The towers, as well as all constructions on Rime, were powered by a steam generator.

A topographic model of the Rime island was projected by the forechamber imager of Myst.

[edit] Life

One of the whale-like creatures of Rime

The frozen water of Rime had some big whale-like fish sounds of which could be heard from time to time. It is not known if the other islets were populated by other animals

No vegetation is found on Rime, perhaps it can't live on the frozen surface of this Age.
