Saavedro
From MYSTlore
Saavedro is an inhabitant of the age of Narayan. His wife was named Tamra and he had two daughters. He befriended Atrus, who asked him to help Sirrus and Achenar learn about Narayan's careful tending of the Lattice Tree so that they would understand the balance necessary for civilization.
When Sirrus and Achenar returned to Narayan as corrupted adults, they claimed that they could "fix" Narayan, stirring up many of the young people against the elders and causing the neglect of the Tree. When they left Narayan, Saavedro followed and confronted them on J'nanin, where they told him that they had no intention of helping Narayan and left him stranded in the Age.
Saavedro spent twenty years in lonely exile, suffering from periods of madness and believing his family and whole civilization to be dead. This time came to an end when Atrus visited J'nanin, unaware of Saavedro's presence but leaving behind a linking book to Tomahna. Saavedro then began planning and preparing a trap for Atrus that would force him to realize what his sons had done before either killing him or forcing him to rewrite Narayan (an idea based on Saavedro's imperfect knowledge of the Art).
In 9471 DE (1816 AD), he stole Releeshahn from Atrus on Tomahna in an attempt to lure him to J'nanin. From J'nanin, Atrus would have to visit Edanna, Voltaic, Amateria, and finally Narayan before being able to retrieve Releeshahn. Saavedro also kept a journal, portions of which were left various places all over the different ages.
However, instead of Atrus it was the Stranger who followed Saavedro to J'nanin, solved the puzzles of the lesson Ages and reached Narayan. The Stranger eventually confronted Saavedro in Narayan and was able to open the outer ice shield (something Saavedro had never accomplished), allowing both of them to see that the Lattice Tree was still alive, proof that the Narayani were not dead after all. The Stranger forced Saavedro to give him the Releeshahn book by trapping him between the shields, then opened the outer shield, allowing him to return to his home and family.

[edit] Trivia
- Saavedro was portrayed by American actor Brad Dourif, famous for his roles in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, among many others.
- Saavedro is the main villain in the game Myst III: Exile. Although not either evil nor an enemy, he is the antagonist of the game, although in the end, he is redeemed and rescued by the player.
- Saavedra was the surname of author Miguel de Cervantes, the writer of the classic story Don Quixote. Fans believe it is a reference to the titular character of said novel, with whom Saavedro shares a kind of delusion.
- It is a common practice among Saavedro's fans to shorten his name as a petname. These nicknames include Saav, Saavy, Saavie, and many others besides, and nearly every fan has a preferred way of shortening it.
- Saavedro's name is also very commonly misspelled - and not just by Myst fans! Several years ago, Atrus and Saavedro action figures were released - though the package for Saavedro's misspelled his name as "Saveedro".
- It is thought that in the lyrics (in Narani) to the song "The Dilemma" from the Myst III: Exile Soundtrack allude to Saavedro. At one point, the singers seem to be saying something quite akin to "mani saavi" - and when "saavi" is taken to mean "Saavy", it is quite easy to assume that they are referring to Saavedro.
