The scarab beetle is a small insect with a golden carapace that was found in the age of Riven; though it could be seen flitting around in the distance quite often, it was not rare to catch a glimpse of the beetle up close on Jungle Island.
Gehn seemed to appreciate the scarab's aesthetic as he used its wings as part of his viewer design in the Beetle Room on Temple Island, but this could very well be connected to his use of the insect as a crucial ingredient in making the ink for his linking books. A telling inkwell made out of a scarab's husk could be found in Age 233, and Catherine also acknowledges in her journal that Gehn specifically wrote the materials necessary for the Art into the age.
A D'ni proverb supports this, which would seem to imply that the Scarab Beetles were used by the D'ni long before Gehn wrote Riven:
- A Tree falls; a page arises.
- A scarab is captured; ink is released.
- Life is taken; and Age is given.
No further substantial proof of this has been uncovered.
