Selenitic is one of the many Ages written by Atrus while he was living on Myst Island. It is one of the few that shows no evidence of being plundered by Sirrus and Achenar, as it was never inhabited.

Originally idyllic with the exception of an uncomfortably hot breeze, Selenitic was altered drastically by a meteor shower shortly after Atrus arrived. The Age is now scarred with craters (one of which formed a large lake) and a volcanic chasm, though it does now have a pleasant breeze.

Atrus noticed that the Age had some unexplained mysteries to solve. One mystery which has yet to be explained is the fading of the ink of some entries in his Selenitic Journal.

[edit] Geography

Map of Selenitic

Little is known of the Age before the meteor shower. Currently, the island has assumed a crescent shape with a little belt of land around a big lake, which was apparently formed by the meteor. A little islet protrudes from the center of the lake. Shortly after the initial meteor shower, Atrus observed a large volcanic chasm open up, providing access to a maze-like system of underground caves. In order to explore these caves more fully, Atrus built a rail network for a device based on D'ni mining technology. The age has been almost completely transformed since Atrus' original visit--oddly, the only thing which remains the same is the stream next to which Atrus spent his first night in the Age. In every other respect, the once-barren Age has become an oasis.

A spaceship-like structure identical to the one found on Myst was built around the link-in point.

Selenitic is known for its acoustic puzzles which are solved by utilizing the distinct sounds that are on the island.

[edit] Hotspots

The tree grove

Places of interest included five hotspots:

  • A ruined clock;
  • A lava chasm;
  • A tree grove;
  • A crystal forest;
  • An underground tunnel which leads to the islet.

Atrus had installed sound amplifiers and transmitters in each hotspot, all of which pointed to the small islet in the center of the large lake. This islet is where he had built the receiver station.

[edit] Background

The following section is written from an OOC point of view. Events and elements surrounding the Myst Universe are regarded as fictional.
  • Early concept drawings indicate that Selenitic was actually a planet, reached through flying the Spaceship of Myst. In this case, the spaceship of Selenitic would have thus been the very same ship as the one on Myst and not a replica.[1]
  • Early plans indicated that the maze was to be a walkable structure. However, that scheme would have required a great amount of render time for all of the slide images involved (one for each step and turn), so the Mazerunner was conceived.[2]
