Spaceship
From MYSTlore
The spaceship is a structure on Myst Island that looks like a rocket; its purpose was obviously to power a malfunctioning linking book and later one of the places of protection for Selenitic.
This device worked with sliders; once the sliders are placed in the right frequency, it will reveal the link to Selenitic. There was also an organ inside, in order to help Atrus find the right pitch by ear.
The Spaceship is the only place of protection of Myst that doesn't reveal an actual linking book. The book will instead appear in its screen.
For unknown reasons, a rocket similar to that one, but with a non-functional organ, is the Link-in point of Selenitic, that probably served as a linking chamber.
[edit] Background
The following section is written from an OOC point of view. Events and elements surrounding the Myst Universe are regarded as fictional.
- According to RAWA the 'D'ni sources' mention that the Selenitic linking book was "powered by machinery", but do not describe that in any detail, therefore Cyan used the ship's screen to represent that[1]. We can suppose that it was a system similar to Gehn's, seen 4 years later in Riven.
- Perhaps the actual reason has been that the Spaceship was originally intended to physically transport the player to Selenitic. The Rocket of Selenitic was intended to be the very same ship (now unpowered), not a replica linking chamber. However it seems that the game philosophy was later changed, which explains why there is no linking book.[2]
- This however left a small plot gap. While the Rocket contributes to the surreal feeling of the game, there has been no in-universe explanation as why Atrus would have bothered to build such a structure on Myst and Selenitic.
- The Selenitic age puzzle is considered to be extremely easy to those with a good tonal ear, but notoriously difficult puzzle to others.
