[edit] Windows Vista
Windows Vista introduces a few security mechanisms that cause slight problems and confusion. On the other hand, it also expands upon Windows XP's compatibility mechanisms, so the game will run fine with a few adjustments.
Do note that you will need administrator privileges to run the game; there is no known way at this point to avoid that.
The installer may be recognized by Windows Vista as an obscure fax program, with an alert of being "known to cause problems"; the reason for this is unclear; in any case, the warning can safely be ignored, as installation will work perfectly. At the end, you will be prompted to register; since Mattel Interactive does not exist any more, this is meaningless and essentially has to be skipped.
Before launching the game, run its Setup program. The default graphics settings might be okay, but especially if you're on a widescreen display, you should change the resolution to fit the aspect ratio. When you close the Setup but didn't perform any changes (e.g., if the settings were already to your liking), Windows Vista will incorrectly assume that the Setup was an installation program (due to its name) and that it did not function correctly (due to not having changed anything. Once again, you should safely ignore this, as everything is probably fine.
However, if you try and run the game, you will likely be met by a brief full screen of black, only to have the game quietly exit afterwards.
You must adjust the compatibility settings. To do so, go to the shortcut's properties. The Compatibility tab should have these settings checked (other combinations may work but have not been tested):
- Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 2000
- Disable visual themes
- Disable desktop composition
- Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
- Run this program as an administrator.
Afterwards, you should be able to run realMyst as usual.
Note that some of the above settings affect other applications, but only while realMyst is running (though even while it is in the background). Fortunately, as soon as you close realMyst, the effect on other applications will be reverted.
