Surprise in Minkata was the name of a MO:UL Forums thread, and later an HTML-based game, created by Norfren.

[edit] Forum thread

The thread started out with a few modified screenshots, supposedly taken by Norfren in the Minkata desert, of a cathedral and some ruined structures. Later, simple puzzles were introduced that the community solved together (like opening a door based on instructions written in Finnish). The game went underground and involved places that were supposed to be in Minkata, but had nothing in common with the IC version. New ages, like a pod and an island in D'ni with a view of Kerath's Arch, were released. There were some interactive puzzles made possible through Javascript on Norfren's website. The last thread puzzle was opening a case to get at a linking book; after that, the game continued on the website, though people continued posting hints and comments in the thread.

[edit] Website

The game continued on the website where everyone could explore at their own pace. The premise was that when everyone linked through the linking book, their Relto books stopped working. There were two unnamed ages, including a maze and puzzles, with an overarching puzzle of repowering the Relto book. Pieces of the ages were initially blocked off with blocks of stone and closed books so that the puzzle would not be solved immediately.

[edit] Original game

Much of the game is taken from an earlier game of Norfren's.[1] Some of the pictures were created for fun in 2004, like the desert and pod ages, and an age not found in the newer game. When the thread was started, he used images from the desert and said it was Minkata, and later added pieces from other ages. This new version finally ended up on the website of the old game, and is almost the same. Some areas are unavailable in the new version but can still be found by starting here instead.

[edit] Reaction

The thread was eagerly accepted. Posters acted as if they were there with Norfren, adding comments about how they were going swimming or almost fell. They added more story to the thread, although Norfren was the only one who added any new places.
