Do we need to add Category:Characters and Category:D'ni people to the articles that are in the Category:Kings of D'ni? That category is already a sub-category of both of them. In fact, couldn't we just put D'ni people under Category:Characters to prevent duplication? Blade Lakem 15:34, 23 November 2007 (CST)

I don't know. What's the policy on articles in subcategories that are subsets of larger categories? Talashar 08:44, 25 November 2007 (CST)
We don't have one. What speaks against doing so: 1) Wikipedia and most other wikis don't do it; 2) it can eventually lead to needless complexity. What speaks for it: MediaWiki currently doesn't let you actually see supercategories directly. You'd have to navigate to one, at which point you'd see its immediate supercategory only. For instance, if we were to strictly follow this policy, Me'emen would be categorized Kings of D'ni. You'd click on that, then click on D'ni people, then on Characters, and finally on People. You wouldn't have the slightest hint (other than the relatively logical naming) that Kings of D'ni is actually a sub-sub-subcategory of People, and that thus, indirectly, Me'emen is categorized a person. Moreover, going to People only shows you the immediate subcategories as well as immediate members. It doesn't show you members of subcategories. Chucker 17:31, 25 November 2007 (CST)
There is a thing on some wikis at least that lets you click plus signs next to category names to see subcategories. Gorobay 17:58, 25 November 2007 (CST)
Yup. I might add that. However, I see the bigger issue in not being able to see supercategories on articles, and I haven't found anything for that yet. Chucker 18:05, 25 November 2007 (CST)
(Gorobay presumably means CategoryTree.)
I might try and work on something breadcrumb-like to replace the current category footer. Chucker 18:11, 25 November 2007 (CST)
