Talk:Main Page
From MYSTlore
[edit] A few notes
-
Several image-related things don't work at this point; resizing is one of them. So, don't be surprised if the very same syntax works fine in Wikipedia but not here; that's a known issue. The reason is the lack of the GD image library, a problem I hope to rectify in the coming weeks.
- We will likely move to a different server eventually, which among other things will bring GD support; this move will not impact any current content or otherwise result in dataloss. Chucker 11:25, 28 September 2006 (CDT)
- We now have GD support, and resizing now works, so go ahead and add upload images and add thumbnails for them in articles (see e.g. Wahrk and Eddie). Chucker 07:32, 29 September 2006 (CDT)
-
The URL of this site will likely change do something largely different, and I might not bother making redirects, as this is a non-public site to begin with. So, if this site randomly disappears, check MC's Team Talk to verify the location hasn't changed.
- We now have a domain of our own, and as such a probably final URL. Chucker 11:20, 28 September 2006 (CDT)
- Backups occur weekly. Chucker 01:27, 23 September 2006 (CDT)
[edit] Interwiki linking
I added an interwiki connection to Wikipedia, so you can now do[[wikipedia:foo]]to link to a page named "foo" on Wikipedia, like this: wikipedia:foo. Chucker 07:51, 7 October 2006 (CDT)
If there is interest in creating translated versions of MYSTlore (I might launch a German one), I wil gladly set that up as well. Chucker 07:54, 7 October 2006 (CDT)
I went ahead. As with Wikipedia, you can use the de: and en: prefixes to link between both languages. It appears such links don't integrate when on Talk pages, but that's not exactly a big problem. On normal pages, it works just fine; check the main page for a link.
If you haven't noticed, I've also reorganized the sidebar to better reflect the specific needs of this site. Chucker 15:43, 7 October 2006 (CDT)
[edit] Caching
I'd like to add the following to MYSTlore:Citations:
- Often, such references eventually become unavailable. For example, the websites of forum posts might no longer run. Tools such as The Wayback Machine archive a lot of pages, but aren't always as thorough or complete as needed. In order to avoid this effect, when you reference such a website, make a complete copy of it by using your browser's Save As… feature.
However, three issues arise with this approach:
- the format used by browsers for such storage is often proprietary. For example, Safari and other WebKit browsers use a "webarchive", which is actually a binary property list concatenating all files related to the page together. Other browsers use different techniques, and they tend not to be interoperable. There are tools to create a simple folder hierarchy that'll reflect the page and work in any browser, but what I'd like is not to need users to download such tools. Is there a webpage that can do this? I.e., you input a URL, and it'll provide you with, say, a zip archive containing a set of folders with the entire page?
- much more problematically, such archiving can be seen as a copyright violation. Google's cache merely has a "Google is neither affiliated with the authors of this page nor responsible for its content." disclaimer, but has in the past been controversial, to my knowledge. Is there a good way to cache such information without risking infringement?
- should we have a way for users to upload a complete archive to MYSTlore that is then accessible with a browser?
Anticipating your thoughts, Chucker 20:33, 19 October 2006 (CDT)
I am trying out hanzo:web, as per Wikipedia's suggestion on their linkrot page. It uses the same engine as the Internet Wayback Machine, but allows for on-demand archiving (albeit with quite some backlog) as well as some Metadata, such as a description and tags. The big plus over Google cache is that we'd have multiple snapshots (just like with WayBackMachine). Assuming this ends up working, we can easily advise users to always request a hanzo:web snapshot whenever they link somewhere "volatile" on the web. Chucker 09:14, 21 October 2006 (CDT)
[edit] OpenSearch
MYSTlore now supports OpenSearch, which means, among other things, that if you use Firefox 2 or Internet Explorer 7, their search field will highlight and let you add MYSTlore as a search engine, so you can directly search MYSTlore from your browser's search field. Try it: it's neat. Chucker 09:30, 1 November 2006 (CST)
[edit] Did you know?-box
May I suggest that the Did you know?-part of the front page is changed to make it stand out from the rest of the page. Perhaps a reddish box... and perhaps also "This section is in progress. A total of 9 factoids has been collected." and "Reshuffle • List all • Contribute" should be on one line to make it a bit smaller. Now the focus goes there instead of on the actual factoid in question (the small print makes it stand out, and the actual factoid looks like a regular part of the page). 0123456789 15:13, 8 December 2006 (CST)
- More like this? (You may have to clear caches to see the changes properly.) Chucker 15:31, 8 December 2006 (CST)
- Much better! Though perhaps you should put the box around "Did You Know? This section is in progress. A total of 9 factoids has been collected. Reshuffle • List all • Contribute" too? Btw, why is this page locked? IMHO it really does need to be made more attractive since it is the first thing you see when you enter the site; being able to help out would be nice. Wouldn't it be enough to lock it for anonymous users? 0123456789 15:38, 8 December 2006 (CST)
The page was locked because of spam, from a registered user. I've removed the protection now. Feel free to improve it. Chucker 16:03, 8 December 2006 (CST)
[edit] Multiple columns for News and Events section
I'd like to see the Recent and Upcoming subsections of News and Events take up one column, each. Multiple columns are supported in recent versions of Gecko (Firefox, Seamonkey, etc.) and pre-release builds of WebKit (Safari, OmniWeb, Shiira, etc.). They would take better advantage of width, requiring less height, therefore letting us display more content in the same overall space; we could probably go from three events each to four (or even five) without actually taking up more space, except for browsers such as IE7 that don't support this.
However, it would look visually unpleasant to have the columns broken up randomly; I would like an enforced break at each of the headers (so that "Upcoming" is always on top of the right column, rather than sometimes at the bottom of the left or in the second or third or fourth row of the second column). That would only be possible with column-break-before or column-break-after, which currently neither Gecko nor WebKit support (though it's looking like WebKit soon will). So I'm leaving things as is for now. Chucker 05:42, 13 January 2007 (CST)
[edit] Events
I added an event about the third third anniversary of the DutchMYSTCommunity and now the past events are displaying an event that's planned for the 9th (in 8 days). What did I do wrong? Marein 08:15, 1 April 2007 (CDT)
- Omitting leading zeros wreaks havoc, unfortunately. Chucker 11:34, 1 April 2007 (CDT)
[edit] Layout
I was taking a look at Mystpedia and thought we could maybe do a similir layout on the main page? I gave it a try but messed it up, otherwise I'd have showed that off here ;) Who's up for it?
PS: Why didn't they request a fr.mystlore.com instead? *grmble*

[edit] MYSTlore signature banner
I seem to recall a request (from Chucker, maybe?) that someone create a MYSTlore signature banner. You know... one of those thin, little, advertising graphics that people put under their signature on forum posts, emails, etc. Did anyone ever create one? --DedHed 08:22, 17 December 2007 (CST)
- OK, I'll take the lack of response as a "no." ;-) I've taken the small graphic from the top, left-corner of the site, and asked a lovely, young lady I know to whip us up a signature banner based on that. I'll keep you posted. --DedHed 08:56, 21 December 2007 (CST)
- Here's banner number 1. Image:MystLoreSignatureBanner1.jpg I'll upload a couple more soon, so users can have a choice. Also, I didn't give this image a category becuase I couldn't figure out which one was appropriate, so feel free to slap one on there. --DedHed 16:19, 1 January 2008 (CST)
I probably did request this a while ago, and no, I don't think anyone else has attempted one yet. (I was hoping we'd eventually move to a design based on an actual MYSTlore logo Shoom'lah quite early on, but given time constraints on my part, I'm not sure this will materialize any time soon.) Chucker 16:50, 2 January 2008 (CST)
- Do you still have a copy of that Shoom'lah? If so, PM it to me via the mystonline.com forum, along with some details on how you want the signature banner to look. I'll pass it on to my friend. --DedHed 22:12, 10 January 2008 (CST)
[edit] Getting MYSTlore known
I started a poll on the Myst Online forums. Some people think MYSTlore needs to look more distinctive. Gorobay 20:04, 4 January 2008 (CST)
- I would like a more distinctive look. Do you have any suggestions on who I could contract for this? Chucker 01:34, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
[edit] mdni: and wikipedia:
When these are used, they create links to the right places, but they do not make links in the sidebar like de: and nl: do. Someone should fix this. Gorobay 12:16, 24 April 2008 (CDT)
- For wikipedia, that's intended (the links to the side are for translations); for mdni, that's something I'll look into. Chucker 01:34, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
- …fixed! Chucker 01:41, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
[edit] MYSTlore Search Plugin for Firefox
Can I host this file here, or can someone host it somewhere where it can be directly downloaded? Floydman 22:59, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
- As of Firefox 2 and IE 7, you can simply click to the left of the search bar to add MYSTlore as a search provider, thanks to OpenSearch. Chucker 01:34, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Proposal For Wiki Formatting
Hi guys. I haven't been in the Myst scene for years, but I found this wiki. Good job so far! But one thing I've noticed. Now, I spent quite a lot of time working at the official Guild Wars wiki. We have some bureaucrat structure and some amazing formatting, as you may have seen. Have any plans been made yet for infobox guidelines? We could really use some. Primarily for Ages and People at first, but we can branch out. Gehn123 16:44, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
[edit] MYSTlore bookmark icon
Within the last few days my bookmark icon for this site turned into a blue flame. What's up? Floydman 14:07, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
