Indeed. I wasn't aware of this. :-\
Not sure if this is a problem with MediaWiki, or libGD, or something else (I'm thinking it's a limitation in Debian's gd package, but I wouldn't know). Just for kicks, here's a comparison of the PNG version, and the same image as 100%-quality JPEG, both in their 180 pixels-wide thumbnails:

That said, JPEG is generally preferable in these cases anyway. I appreciate trying to avoid lossy compression, but realistically, most viewers would probably prefer saving some bandwidth over getting the very last inch of quality. Chucker 18:42, 3 December 2006 (CST)
