Talk:Yahvo
From MYSTlore
[edit] Name of Hebrew God
I rolled this back, because JHWH is the correct spepling of their God. Hebrew writing does not have vowels. Yahweh is one possible pronunciation; Yehovah another. It's ambiguous and, seeing as the term was coined several millennia ago, the answer to the "true" pronunciation will likely never be answered. That's my understanding of it, anyway. - My idea was that writing "Yahweh" (which, AFAIK, is a wholly accepted English transcription of the word) would make the similarity to "Yahvo" a whole lot more obvious? 0123456789 16:36, 26 November 2006 (CST)
- English uses YHWH (or, less commonly, YHVH) to represent the Tetragrammaton. J is for you German types. In English the name is commonly called "Yahweh" and pronounced that way by some Christian churches that use the name- or in the movie "Bruce Almighty". "Jehova(h)" is older, though still used, but it's probably a bit of shaky scholarship from the past: Wikipedia section. Renoah 12:37, 28 November 2006 (CST)
Although I put W in there, it might be better to use V, which is the modern pronunciation of the letter and makes the name closer to Yahvo. Talashar 18:28, 26 November 2006 (CST)
- I honestly don't understand what's wrong with "Yahweh" or "Yahveh", this is an English article, not a Hebrew one, and the point is to show the similarity to "Yahvo". 0123456789 19:13, 27 November 2006 (CST)

- Yeah, I guess it's your call, really... but to me it seems a bit silly that we can't name the particular word that is discussed. 0123456789 12:46, 28 November 2006 (CST)
- Honestly, I personally don't much care (but then again, I'm not Jewish). Perhaps it's really simpler/better to just put the particular pronunciation in question in there. Chucker 12:48, 28 November 2006 (CST)
