Anna, or Ti'ana (the D'ni adaption of her name, from tE'ana[?], "storyteller"; 9350 - 9438 DE (1695 - 1783 AD)) was the first human from the surface of Earth to enter D'ni. Much of what is known about her has been described in the Book of Ti'ana.

[edit] Biography

Anna was born in 1694 AD (9350 DE). She and her father were surveyors in what would become New Mexico. (Her mother had died in a rock climbing accident when Anna was a child.) They discovered a cave system leading to D'ni but shortly afterwards her father became ill and died. [1]

[edit] First contact with the D'ni

With nothing for her on the surface, Anna descended into the tunnels and eventually reached the D'ni caverns. The news came in the middle of a Guild meeting on whether the D'ni should resume efforts to reach the surface, and after surprising them by learning their language she was brought before the Council to be questioned about life on the surface.

Upon hearing her answers the D'ni decided not to make contact with surface-dwellers, but Anna herself was allowed to stay in the cavern rather than be exiled to a prison Age. Kahlis and Tasera brought her into their home, where she became a close friend of their son Aitrus.

[edit] Relationship to Aitrus

Anna and Aitrus began to write an Age together, Gemedet, but when Veovis learned of this violation of custom he had the book confiscated and Aitrus disgraced, the first rift in the friendship of Aitrus and Veovis.

Anna went to Aitrus's old friend Kedri, a Legislator who found a precedent for ahrotahntee being allowed to visit other Ages, and the book was restored.

Some time later Aitrus asked Anna to marry him and she accepted. It was necessary to have the union approved by the Guild Council, and all were in favor except one: Veovis, outraged by the mingling of D'ni and non-D'ni blood. He only relented when Aitrus reminded him of a promise he had made, but declared their friendship at an end.

Anna and Aitrus had one son, Gehn, named after Aitrus's grandfather. Gehn was sickly at first and almost died, with D'ni Healers blaming it on his mixed blood. He lived, though, and it was a bitter separation when he joined the Guild of Book Makers at age four, one Anna allowed only reluctantly.

Anna became a D'ni citizen by law, the first ahrotahn to do so. She pushed for social reform and to improve the condition of the lower classes.

Veovis became acquainted with A'gaeris, another who shared his opinions of D'ni purity. Unjustly accused of trading in illegal books, he and A'gaeris plotted to lead a revolt against the leaders of D'ni, but their plan was foiled by Anna. Veovis was sentenced to death, but Anna pleaded for him, showing evidence that A'gaeris had framed him in the illegal book affair. Veovis's fate was reconsidered, and he was sent to a Prison Age instead.

But A'gaeris managed to free Veovis, and together they succeeded in destroying D'ni, spreading a plague through the cavern and its Ages. (See Fall of D'ni). Aitrus died luring A'gaeris into a Death Book, and Anna and Gehn fled to the surface, where she raised him in the Cleft. Gehn came to believe that the Fall was due to Anna's interference and left when he was fourteen. He came back five years later, hoping Anna would be able to help his wife, but Keta died giving birth to Atrus, whom he left with Anna.

[edit] With Atrus

Anna raised Atrus in the Cleft, telling him stories of the D'ni and teaching him to pay attention to the Whole of things and their interconnections as her father had taught her. When Gehn came back for Atrus and took him to D'ni, Anna followed in secret, keeping an eye on her grandson for some years. She planned to confront Gehn when he imprisoned Atrus for defying him, but found Catherine in Gehn's study instead. Together they devised a plan to trap Gehn on Riven. Catherine was to be married to Gehn, but she and Anna made short-term changes to the Riven Descriptive Book so that the ceremony was interrupted by earthquakes and the opening of fiery chasms, interrupting the ceremony and allowing her to escape to Anna's Age of Myst with Atrus, destroying all the linking books on Riven.

She helped raise Atrus and Catherine's children, Sirrus and Achenar, but died when they were still young, apparently as a result of visiting one of Catherine's Ages, although the specifics are unknown. She was buried on Myst Island.

Catherine believed that Atrus, in order to deal with the loss of his grandmother, buried himself in work, spending less and less time with the kids. At 8 years old, Sirrus must have seen this as rejection, but he was too proud to let it shown. Achenar never knew how to channel his emotions appropriately, therefore setting the stage for the sinister characters they would eventually grow into.
