Voltaic is one of Atrus's Lesson Ages, created in order to teach specific principles of the Art to Atrus' sons, Sirrus and Achenar. The phrase that applies to Voltaic is "Energy powers future motion".

Like with the other Lesson Ages, the Book to Voltaic is located on J'nanin. The Book was not immediately accessible upon entry to J'nanin. Instead, access to the chamber where the Book resided was only granted after the completion of a puzzle involving the reflection of light through poles scattered around the island.

Voltaic itself is a desolate Age, consisting of only a rocky island, sea, and sky. Voltaic was designed to teach about energy, and has machinery all over the island. In keeping with the theme of energy, various sources of power are accessible throughout the Age, such as flowing water and lava. At the beginning of the lesson, all of the machinery was powered off. The goal of the Age was to first power up all of the machinery, then eventually getting the airship to function, which would lead to the way to leave the Age.

Like with Edanna and Amateria, Voltaic was in some or more ways tampered with by Saavedro, which means that the age's true state at the time the brothers first visited it is supposed to be a bit different from what the Stranger found out during his search for the Releeshahn book. Evidence of this is provided through finding some of the pieces of Saavedro's journal in which he states he had transported some rocks from Amateria to Voltaic, in order to use the energy of the volcanic age to make the rocks float.
