[edit] The map

[edit] Discussion

Much discussion has been going on as to the meaning of the map and its different elements. The map features numerous continent or island names, as well as names of several bodies of water. Furthermore, the map displays locations of pods with dark red indicators. The timezone grid and the rotational information make up another important part of information gained from the map. Lastly, the Guild of Surveyors' seal can be found in the lower left corner of the map.

[edit] Transliteration and translation

Explorer BrettM created this transliterated version of the pod map. Translating the pod map is difficult because only few of the D'ni words found on it are known to the public. However, work is progressing. Below is a list of all transliterated text. (Partly) translated or guessed words are in bold, with an explanation of the meaning after the word(s).

  • Continent/island names
  • Bodies of water
    • Birahnokh rintotee
    • Gahrahno vahmot - Gahrahno, a contraction of gahro and ahno, means "great water" or "ocean". Vahmot means "eastern". Therefore, Gahrahno vahmot means "eastern ocean".
    • Gulem shahveroo
  • Other
    • Zik - The part of the map this word can be found in, the upper rigth box, seems to serve as a legend, explaining that the dark red indicators are pods. Thus, zik is believed to be the D'ni word for "pod".
    • Grahnerokh regerah - This term can be found on the map twice along a curved line with arrow heads running across it. Since this line is believed to indicate the movement of the day and night over the planet (rather than the rotation of the planet), grahnerokh regerah might mean just that. This theory is reinforced by the fact that "okh" means 'of', as in "movement of the sun/light/planet".

[edit] Numbers

  • The larger numbers on the map, accompanied by dark red indicators, are believed to show pod locations and numbers. This theory is enforced by the legend on the upper right of the map, depicting a pod, a D'ni word and a numberless indicator. Also, numbers can be found in the Negilahn and Dereno pods that match the numbers on the Negilahn and Dereno continents/islands on the map.
  • More numbers can be found at the points where the time-zone grid and the curved line near the bottom of the map cross. These numbers are believed to indicate time zones on the planet. Judging from the numbers on the map, there are 13 hours in one day. Note that these hours are not measured in surface time.
  • The last kind of numbers are the smaller ones scattered over the map. It is suggested that these indicate water depth, as they can not be found on land. Reinforcing this theory, explorer nebodin created a depth-map using the numbers, and it resembles an actual depth-map strikingly well.

Accompanying some of these last numbers are small symbols that resemble the dark red pod indicators. The meaning of these symbols is unclear at this point.

[edit] Location of Tetsonot

Tetsonot, pod number 6, is found to the east of Cheecho. It is an underwater, leaky pod that appears to be mostly malfunctioning, although red emergency lights and sound generators appear to be working to some degree.

[edit] Uses in puzzles

The map provides much answers in the search for answers regarding the puzzles in the Pod Age. For example, before the map was released, the Negilahn and Dereno were believed to be separate Ages, while the map proved this belief false.

The map can furthermore be used to determine the approximate times at which a portal will appear in any pod, relative to other pods. This can be done because the (approximate) amount of time between any two meridians on the map is known; namely 1 hour and 13 minutes.

[edit] Error in map

The map was discovered to contain an error. When transliterating the map, the word re-gerah can be found. Note it contains a very rare D'ni dash. Members of the D'ni Linguistic Fellowship thought this dash to be suspicious. They emailed RAWA about it, and he confirmed:

Yeah, the dash should not be there.

Thus, the dash should be ignored when transliterating and translating. In stead of re-gerah, the word regerah should be used.
